Okay this is now my third attempt. I never give up:) Perseverance is everything!! I am praying for all of you. And now I am praying that I can make it through this message and actually have it post. I apologize if it catches up and you have three of the same messages coming from me. For fear of repeating myself, I am going to try again:) I LOVE Life 101.9. I listen to it every day. My favorite group is Kutless (mostly because my nephew is in the band). Anyway, google "What Faith Can Do" if you haven't heard of that song. Also, Matthew West's "Strong Enough" is pretty powerful. We aren't strong enough without Him! "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength and I don't have to be strong enough." 
Lastly, I will email you about maybe having an outing with Ethan. Do you think Carson would be willing to come? I don't know how he would feel about that.

Happy birthday, stupidhead! I can't believe that you are 40. That is OLD. I have been thinking about our past birthday parties and two came to mind. There was the halloween party in grandma's basement in DeWitt. All I remember of that was that I was not allowed downstairs except to see the decorations before the party started. I am sure that it was some wild and crazy times! My other fond memory is actually my birthday party in DeWitt. You put on a magic show for my party. I heard about your illness on Leo Grecco show from your friend. I have Esophageal cancer. Diagnosed in Feb. 2010, surgery in March '10 followed by chemo. I was Stage II,N1M0. I am 18 months free of disease at this point. It is a tough disease and you will be in my daily prayers. I will try to make the benefit and meet you in person. I do have a church event that night but will try to make it. I am 58 years old, married, 4 grown children and six grandchildren. Keep positive and I wish you well. By the way, my birthday is also Oct 14th!!!!!!!!!!!

I think about you all day long, I pull up this website and immediately smile looking at the photos of such a wonderful family. From a distance, I can't even begin to imagine what your world is like from day to day, wondering what tomorrow will bring. However, I do know that no matter what happens, you are loved by so many and supported by so many. Because you two are such wonderful, giving, and generous people, that love and generosity will be returned to you ten-thousand times over. My mother sent me this email last night and I just had to paste it into a message for you on this site. 

"Hi, honey. Today I was at the Fargo Holiday Inn for a Town Hall Forum. The speaker was Anne Thompson from NBC news. She wears a yellow bracelet and has for more than 6 years. Somebody had sent an email to her at the "Today" show asking her why she wore this bracelet.
She explained that her cousin was diagnosed with esophageal cancer more than six years ago. At the time he was diagnosed, he was told he had only six months to live and several members of Anne's family started wearing these bracelets. The amazing part is even though he was diagnosed and told he had only 6 months to live, he continues to live and is doing okay - he still has the cancer but he's lived much longer than he was originally told.

Please pass this information on to Amy and tell her the story and tell her that she should not give up hope nor should Eric or anyone else. Miracles do happen.

My dear Eric, my heart is breaking for one of my most favorite people! You have such a special place in my heart. This verse was the first that I clung to when I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer almost exactly 2 years ago. I came through treatment wanting to live for my family but ultimately giving myself to Jesus to use for his Glory. I can't say that was a popular attitude and some who love me felt quite betrayed. I knew the only way to not fall into the depths of demons in fear and anxiety was to completely love and trust Jesus...and be willing to die with grace.

You have this amazing way of making others around you feel good and comfortable and always knew how to make your friends smile. I am confident over the last 20+ (oh my) years that you are that person but even better with a love for your family and passion for their care that is deep in your soul. I can hear the voices that are in your head. I can feel the air that doesn't let you breathe. I am so deeply sorry that this is the cross you have been given to carry. Know that Jesus carried this cross first and he is there with you now. He knows your future, He aches for your pain and desires for you to give it all to Him. Deuteronomy 6:5 says Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength...(and with all your cancer). Be thankful for the Love and Healing that Jesus WILL bring to you. Understand that a Faith in Jesus is a gift to be recieved and has an impact on all of those around us. I am a LONG way from "getting it" but I know God sees my heart and knows my desire to serve him in my weaknesses. Actually, I have come to embrace my weaknesses (very not normal for me) and see the power of God and His strength fill me. I have said that normal life is way harder then having cancer. I think that is because I leaned on God more through cancer then in the day to day family issues. Well, as USUAL I have "talked" your blessed ear off! I am on my knees for you, friend. You look absolutely great...same smile that I "fell" for so long ago. Your wife and boys are absolutely beautiful and I will be lifting them to the Lord I love also. I have been babbling through a blog since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have no expectations that I can promise you wonderful things there but it seems God has spoken through me to encourage others with my experiences. Okay, so enough of me, My family will be praising God for you and petitioning on your behalf for complete and total healing and restoration of your body and your soul. Can't help but think of all the good times we had in track and at the 'Q'. After reading the updates I realize the odds are less than favorable. But I remember you being part of a track program was in pretty bad shape for a long time. I remember your senior class (Sonsalla, Bell, Zimmer, Madsen, etc) leading that program to the first of three conference titles and putting events into the State meet and Drake Relays. Being a freshman amongst that team was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. I hope you'll remember those days and use that success to help you fight and win this battle as well.

Eric & Amy, Just a thought from back when Dennis went through so much of this. He kept asking "how long do I have??" I tried to tell him -- you have TODAY. The most any of us have is right now. And it just happened that right about then,that Iowa basketball player died because he pulled out in front of a snow plow (Dec. 1992). So it's NOW: 100% TOMORROW: who knows. I remember it being exhausting to live with the pain and the fear but you have such a huge support group and are doing the best you can. Amy -- keep the faith, girl!!You are stronger than you think but God knows you can't handle it all -- that's why He's there, so hand it over. Best wishes and hugs all around. Tell Ethan I miss him!

I was unaware of your situation until Penny filled me in. Finding the words to adequately express my emotions is difficult. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, focusing on the positive energy that will help lift your spirits and support your efforts.
As the parent of an adult with a critical and chronic illness, I have learned a few things. May I say that the future for each and every one of us is nebulous. Perseverating on the unknown is not a good investment of our time and energy. Stay attached to the wonder of the here and now and the quality of your life skyrockets.
Just an aside, I had a dear friend who received a dismal cancer prognosis. He and his girlfriend quickly got married, and lived every moment fully. Twelve years later, they finally decided that they just might have the time together to have children. They adopted! They had 34 years of marriage! No one can predict the future! So none of us should try!

Good Morning, thanks for the update, and of course very hard to hear the timeline. It is completely unfair and I'm so so sad for all of you. I love the idea of video taping for the boys. One day that will be priceless to them. I'm sure it all just feels so unreal right now. We just shouldn't even be having to talk about this stuff. But, the doctor is right; you can't get stuck in it and then miss everything (I know much easier said than done). You and Eric need to enjoy each other's company and have some laughable moments. It already sounds lik Eric's sense of humor is showing under this most stressful, sad time! We would love to come visit you sometime. The MSU crew is there for you and we want to help. Even if we only get to see you and Eric for 2 hours, that is enough for us. We will stay at a hotel so no worries about entertaining us. I think Erik is coordinating with you, so I'll wait to see what he comes up with. We can help clean your house, cut/shovel, etc. anything you need. We'd love to babysit too. The boys could come swim at the pool. We love you and will talk to you soon.

Just read your most recent post. Wow! We can not know what God's plan is or understand the why behind situations like these, but we can know that nothing is impossible with God. I know your not Catholic, but I am and I wanted to share with you a great Saint of the Church, St. Peregrine. He is the Patron Saint of those suffering with cancer. Many miracle healings have been attributed to his intercession. If you are interested in learning more you can do a google search. Please understand that when I "pray to" the saints about Eric, I am asking for them to interceed (pray) and ask God for healing for Eric. The Saints, who we know are in heaven with God, are the greatest group of prayer warriors that exists. I will be asking Mary, the Mother of God, Blessed John Paul II, St. Peregrine, and St. Jude among others to pray for Eric's healing. I will also be praying to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for Eric's healing.
